It’s officially October, which means we’re probably only days away from the long-awaited Pixel 6 launch. Google has spent the past two months teasing the phone, offering a first reveal before slowly showing the phone in. advertisements and in person displays exclusive to New York City. A new ad showing in Japan is our latest clue to what’s to come, with a deep focus on how Material You will improve your experience.

This video isn’t the first time we’ve seen Google showcase its next flagship device in a Japanese ad, although it’s certainly more revealing than the last time. The video shows how users can customize their homescreens to suit their personalities, whether they are artists, bakers or whatever (via 9to5Google).

It is this first configuration that is the most interesting, however. We’ve seen Google display an X-shaped widget for Drive before, but this is the first time we’ve seen it for playback controls. It appears again in a later slide, highlighting a family’s photo memories. Unlike the music controls, this widget appears to be an odd shape for images, so it would be surprising to see it hit the road.

The end of the ad shows a more traditional music widget, so these may never leave a design phase. Still, these are one-of-a-kind looks at what might happen in the future for Material You and the Pixel 6.

Along with those weird X-shaped widgets, we also get a new look at the upcoming weather overhaul, as well as this new clock widget with a new date built in. All in all, it looks like home screen designs are about to get interesting again.

Otherwise, there isn’t much new in the announcement. Google is highlighting its Tensor SoC, something we hope to learn a lot more about ahead of launch. The video ends by announcing the phone as “coming soon”. We can only hope that these rumored launch dates prove to be correct.
