Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy continues to postpone his starting quarterback decision for Sunday’s home game against the Detroit Lions.
“The start will be a decision to be made during the game,” said Nagy. “The two (Andy Dalton and Justin Fields) were there this week for practice. Andy is improving every day. We’re just going to see where he is on Sunday.”
Dalton is officially listed as questionable for Sunday after being restricted in practice all week. Dalton sustained a bruised knee in the Bears’ Week 2 win over the Cincinnati Bengals. He missed last week’s embarrassing loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Fields, who struggled on his first start last week, suffered a right thumb injury but has been a full member of training all week and has no injury designation.
“What’s important is that they’re both improving, and for us that’s positive,” Nagy said. “That’s all we can do is continue to see where they are at. Andy with him being limited and continuing to work where he is and then see where he is on Sunday.”
Nagy has repeatedly insisted that health will determine who starts on Sunday. When asked if there was a chance Dalton would be healthy enough to play but not be the starter, the coach refused to bite.
“That’s all we’re working on,” Nagy said.
Third player Nick Foles isn’t in the mix to be the starter.
Considering how it unfolded last week, with Nagy running a schedule that didn’t match Fields’ skills, the coach was asked if he has separate game plans for each QB.
“I’m not going to go into this with a plan. We feel good with where we are with the game plan… sss,” he said, laughing as he held the “s”.
In most circumstances, we would suggest that the coach playfully played with their starting quarterback situation so that the opponent is prepared for two possibilities. This could be the case here. But Nagy seemed so determined to keep Dalton as a starter that he could just beg for some good medical news on Sunday.
