Brandi Carlile: I want to be the new singer of Soundgarden

Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, whose excellent new album In these days of silence is out now, is more than occupied with his own touring and recording career. But in next week’s episode of our Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, she reveals another gig she would definitely agree to: Carlile would “take the time” to tour as the singer of Soundgarden, she said. “I’m such a fan of Chris Cornell,” she says of the Soundgarden frontman, who died in 2017. “I loved him so much. I was so devastated when he left us.

Carlile first performed with surviving members of Soundgarden at the 2019 Cornell Star Tribute in Los Angeles, and went on to record a single Record Store Day, A rooster says, with them (and his longtime teammates Phil and Tim Hanseroth), released last September. Most recently, the band joined her on stage in August to perform the two songs they recorded together, “Black Hole Sun” and the Bath motor finger cut “Research with my good eye closed.” Carlile grew up just outside of Seattle and feels deeply connected to Soundgarden and ’90s grunge; she even first met the Hanseroth twins at London Bridge Studios, where Cornell recorded with Temple of the Dog. “We are inextricably linked with Soundgarden for life,” says Carlile. “They were our heroes.

A Soundgarden spokesperson declined to comment on Carlile’s ambition, but group drummer Matt Cameron – who also stars in Pearl Jam – said Rolling stone last year that Soundgarden is not yet finished. “I think most people assume that the three of us [are] over and over since Chris passed away, ”he said,“ but it’s not. It’s nice to know that people always want to hear us play together. (Carlile also just sang “Better Man” with Pearl Jam at the September Ohana Festival.)

During the homage to Cornell in 2019, Carlile was initially scheduled as a duet on “Hunger Strike” with Chris Stapleton. But then an artist she wouldn’t have identified – “a musician who notoriously doesn’t show up for things” – dropped out of a scheduled performance of “Black Hole Sun” and someone suggested Carlile. “I said to myself: ‘Not only can I do, but, like, I’m here, ”Carlile said. “And I don’t need words. I have this.’ “She made sure the Hanseroth twins were on stage for this performance as well, which would also be her only request if a tour with Soundgarden ever materialized. Mom doesn’t forget the twins.
