LAKE FOREST, Ill. –Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy has said it will be a game-time decision whether Andy Dalton or Justin Fields start quarterback on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
Veteran Nick Foles is not under consideration to begin with, according to Nagy.
“We know what we’re doing and that’s what we believe in and what we’re going with,” Nagy said after Friday practice.
Nagy has repeatedly insisted that Dalton is Chicago’s starter when he is healthy, but the 33-year-old quarterback suffered a bone contusion to his left knee in Week 2 and was inactive during the week. of last Sunday’s 26-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Dalton has had limited practice attendance all week and is officially listed as questionable to face the Lions.
“I feel great,” Dalton said on Friday. “When you have an injury you try to do whatever you can to rehabilitate yourself and feel good as soon as possible. So everything is going in the right direction and everything is improving so I feel good about my situation. . “
Fields suffered a right thumb injury against the Browns, but competed fully all week and is not listed with an injury designation on the final report.
Cleveland sacked Fields nine times in the rookie’s NFL debut and limited him to just 6 of 20 passes for 68 yards and 12 rushing yards in three attempts.
For his part, Fields felt he had had a solid week of training and managed to put the Browns’ game behind him.
“Training this week compared to training last week, I just felt more comfortable in training, just putting that on my belt and going over that,” Fields said. “Last week you really couldn’t do worse than that. I mean, I hope not. But I felt comfortable this week.”
Nagy echoed the sentiment.
“Justin’s game he played last week, he’s done a lot of things that he’s going to learn,” Nagy said. “But we and I also have to help him. I think the most important thing for him is, OK, this is how I was during training week. This is how I was on match day. , both physically and mentally.will I start this week? Am I improving? Is there any improvement? Am I improving in areas I was good at? ? Am I improving myself in the areas I was not so good at?
“And that’s what we do as coaches throughout the training week, is to be able to watch it and see that. I can say from last week to this week that you see this progress. That is, knowing and feeling how he practiced, which is why I would answer that way. “
In other news, Nagy declined to reveal whether he would continue to call offensive plays or hand the task over to offensive coordinator Bill Lazor or another assistant coach. The Bears had totaled just 47 net yards, one net passing yard and an average of 1.1 yards per offensive play in last Sunday’s horrific loss to the Browns.
