The Los Angeles Lakers’ first preseason game against the Brooklyn Nets has just lost almost an entire constellation of interest, as head coach Frank Vogel told the media after the team’s third practice at camp workout that LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Russell Westbrook and Trevor Ariza would all come out on Sunday.
The top three will only be resting after several days with several training sessions at training camp, but Ariza also missed training on Friday, with her second straight day being sidelined with a sore foot.
“There might be more, but for now these are the guys we know won’t play,” said Vogel.
The Lakers will have at least one star, however, as Vogel added that Anthony Davis will play, but “probably just the first quarter” on Sunday.
“We’ll get together after practice tomorrow and see if one of the other guys won’t be there, but right now that’s what we think,” said Vogel.
With all of these veterans out, expect young guys like Talen Horton-Tucker, Malik Monk, Kendrick Nunn, and Austin Reaves all to have plenty of minutes to defend their roles on the rotation.
That’s right: #PreseasonTHT is BACK. The Nets are not ready for this 40 plays.
The absentee group also includes three of the Lakers’ alleged starters for this season and their two main playmakers, so while preseason games tend to give us very little meaningful basketball to analyze, this one. this will have even less than usual.
Despite far less intrigue than the NBA originally planned for this one, the Lakers and Nets are still expected to give the green light at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 3 at Staples Center. The game will be broadcast locally on Spectrum SportsNet and nationally on NBA TV.
