WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling packers will be put on IR in the short term

If you thought the news that Marquez Valdes-Scantling was ruled out for this week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers was bad enough, I have even worse news for you. In another injury announcement Friday night, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler broke the story that MVS will in fact be placed in a short-term injury reserve, meaning the Packers’ deep threat will be missed for at least the next three weeks as he recovers from his hamstring injury.

It comes shortly after NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo announced that pass thrower Za’Darius Smith had back surgery earlier this week and could be out for a much longer period than expected.

Hopefully Valdes-Scantling will return in a month after catching what he called “the biggest throw I have ever caught in my life”.

Without an MVS, the Packers’ speed options are limited, as the team’s fastest receiver is Malik Taylor, who has seven receptions and 80 receiving yards to show for his young NFL career. Here are the season’s stats for the healthy Packers wide receivers who will play in the Pittsburgh Steelers game this weekend:

  • Davante Adams: 25 receptions, 309 yards, 1 touchdown
  • Randall Cobb: 4, 58, 0
  • Allen Lazard: 3, 58, 0
  • Malik Taylor: 2, 14, 0
  • Amari Rodgers: 1, 19, 0
  • Saint-Brown equanimity: 1, 0, 0

Equanimeous St. Brown, technically a player on the practice squad, was designated as protected player this week by the team, the first time they’ve made the distinction for him this season. The practice squad protection designation eliminates the potential for a weekend practice squad poaching to a 53-man squad by another franchise. St. Brown is reportedly likely to replace Valdes-Scantling on the active Packers roster by Sunday. Don’t be surprised if St. Brown sees any reps for the game this week (or in the future), as Green Bay will have to rely on the depth of their receiver to get through that stretch without an MVS.
