The Clubhouse finally allows you to record conversations

Clubhouse will be getting a bunch of new features next month, including one that a lot of people wanted: in-app recording. From October, app users will be able to save a room, save it to their profile and club, or download it. Clubhouse calls the feature “replays”. Creators and moderators are the ones who can save, and they can turn this option on or off. Rooms must be public to be registered.

In addition to full recordings, users will be able to create 30-second shareable clips in rooms that allow it. The app also benefits from a search function allowing users to enter a keyword or name and receive matching rooms, people, clubs and bios. Finally, spatial audio is also coming to Android devices after its rollout to iOS devices in August.

To create a clip, users can tap a scissor icon which will capture the last 30 seconds of audio which can then be downloaded locally and widely shared.

I’ve incorporated a few GIFs above to give you a better idea of how these features work, but overall they address some key issues that Clubhouse has faced: discovery and the desire to revisit conversations that have already had place. Currently, the best way to promote a Clubhouse room is to tweet or post about it elsewhere. The clips tool can attract more people and bring them to the app to hear the rest of an ongoing conversation. Searching the app should fix some of these issues as well, as people search for rooms they might be interested in, rather than relying on the algorithm to promote them.

This allows the Clubhouse to be more up to date with Twitter spaces, which allows recording, as does Greenroom, a competitor of Spotify. Presumably, these social audio platforms could end up becoming the place where people record podcasts and other content in public, with the goal of modifying that content after the session is over and distributing it further as a podcast.
