EAST LANSING – The US Department of Agriculture will invest nearly $ 75 million in 15 partner-led projects to address natural resource concerns on private lands.

This year, projects funded by the Regional Conservation Partnership Program’s alternative funding arrangements focus on climate-smart agriculture and forestry and other conservation priorities, as well as improving the environment. access for historically underserved producers.

Michigan projects include the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, as part of the Michigan Climate Action Plan, planting about 16,400 acres. Funding for the project was approximately $ 5.4 million.

The project, focused on the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, could serve as a model for large-scale forest restoration on private land. MDARD will coordinate all technical assistance using state foresters and will also contract directly with private landowners to encourage forest restoration activities.

The long-term stewardship and maintenance of private forest lands will be encouraged through the development of management plans for the forests planted under the projects. Project partners will report on environmental outcomes related to sedimentation, nutrient loading and carbon sequestration.

The Saginaw Bay Watershed ASSET program has received approximately $ 1.92 million for The Nature Conservation to increase the continued uptake of strip tillage and cover crops in the Saginaw Bay watershed.
