The latest high-resolution images of the flagship Intel Core i9-12900K Alder Lake processor have been disclosed by Yuuki_AnS. The person responsible for the leak obtained the latest technical sample of the chip, which was sold on the Chinese black market for a starting price of US $ 700.

Alder Lake Flagship Intel Core i9-12900K processor gets high-resolution photos, new hardware-guided planning on board

The images give us a better overview of the Intel Core i9-12900K processor, the flagship of the Alder Lake 12th generation Core range, as well as its 1700 contact pads that will make it compatible with LGA 1700 motherboards. Specific processor is the “QX7H” variant and falls under the “ES2” specification. Side profile pictures show that the PCB on the chip is quite thick and will feature a more rectangular design compared to the square Intel chips we’ve seen for over a decade now.

Besides the pictures, we managed to get our hands on a new slide for Intel Alder Lake processors where the company showcased its brand new HGS + (Hardware Guided Scheduling +) feature. Intel says its new base architecture with HGS + prioritizes and manages the distribution of workloads by sending jobs to the best thread for the job, thus maximizing performance per watt. This feature will be enabled by default (on some SKUs) and no user action is required to enable this technology. HGS + functionality is a combination of hardware support in the processor and software optimizations in the latest Windows operating system (11).

This technology should not be confused with Intel’s Thread Director as this is another feature set for Intel Alder Lake processors, but Thread Director and HGS + will work in tandem to optimize performance for hybrid processors like the Intel processor Generation 12 on Windows 11. You can learn more about Intel’s new HGS technology in this article published by UnderFox at Coreteks.

The new HGS + scheduler is likely to only work on 12th generation Intel Alder Lake processors with hybrid core technology. We know that some SKUs will only have Golden Cove cores, so there won’t be much use for HGS + on these chips.

Intel Core i9-12900K 16 Core / 24 Thread Desktop Processor

The Intel Core i9-12900K will be the flagship chip in the Alder Lake 12th generation desktop processor line. It will feature 8 Golden Cove cores and 8 Gracemont cores for a total of 16 cores (8 + 8) and 24 threads (16 + 8). The P cores (Golden Cove) will run at a maximum boost frequency of up to 5.3 GHz with 1-2 cores active and 5.0 GHz with all cores active while the E cores (Gracemont) will run at 3, 90 GHz on 1- 4 cores and up to 3.7 GHz when all cores are loaded.

The processor will have 30MB of L3 cache and the TDP values are maintained at 125W (PL1) and 228W (PL2). The “K” variant is expected to sell for US $ 599 while the non-K variant will sell for US $ 509.

Intel Alder Lake Desktop processors will include both DDR5 and DDR4 memory controllers, and 600 series motherboards will also come with specific DDR5 / DDR4 options. High-end motherboards will retain DDR5 while more mainstream offerings will also open support for DDR4. The Intel Alder Lake line of processors is expected to launch in November with the Z690 platform and the respective DDR5 memory kits.
