During a TGS 2021 interview with Final fantasy creator of the Hironobu Sakaguchi series, Final Fantasy XVI Producer Naoki Yoshida has revealed that the next game will have an “extensive” skill tree system. Yoshida also noted that the decision to include skill trees was made to feel like “growing” a character in a way that feels unique and personal to the player.

To discuss Fantastic, Sakaguchi said that “one of the best feelings” when playing an RPG is when a new skill tree is unlocked. Sakaguchi noted that one of the essential aspects of RPGs is the ability to customize within the confines of a predefined character.

To this, Yoshida revealed that Final Fantasy XVI would have a skill tree that “spans” in a manner similar to Fantastic. Explaining the decision, Yoshida agreed with Sakaguchi and said:

There are generally two ways to play a character. You can either put yourself in the shoes of a predefined protagonist, or as in [Final Fantasy] 14, you can become your own protagonist. But even in the event that you are “playing” a predefined hero, it is best to have some sense of customization in character progression as this provides wider play options.

Additionally, Yoshida mentioned that he was influenced by the games created by Sakaguchi and their ability to make players feel like the hero of the story. Sakaguchi also praised Final Fantasy XIV for his ability to make players feel like the Warrior of Light even when surrounded by other players. Notably, Sakaguchi also expressed interest in writing a FFXIV scenario, or possibly design new costumes for the MMORPG.

Final Fantasy XVI currently does not have a release date, and Yoshida has previously stated that he is working on both FFXIV and FFXVI.
