Vice President Kamala Harris flew to Southern California on Friday for a quick trip, but the White House has not explained the reason, according to a report.

Harris left Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Friday afternoon and flew to Palm Springs, a resort town about 107 miles east of Los Angeles, the Washington Times reported.

The vice president was due to return to Washington on Saturday, the White House said in a statement, according to the newspaper.

Harris and her husband Douglas Emhoff own a home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, but the White House has said Harris will be spending the night in Palm Springs at an unspecified location, according to the Times.

Journalists were not allowed to watch Harris from Maryland, The Times reported.

No public events were on Harris’ schedule for his stay in California, and no local Democrats in California have signaled plans to meet with Harris, according to the newspaper.

Harris ‘plane touched down at Palm Springs International Airport just after 7 p.m. Friday, Palm Springs’ The Desert Sun newspaper reported. A heavy police presence was in the area, the newspaper reported.

Palm Springs Mayor Christy Gilbert Holstege tweeted welcoming Harris on Friday, but the post offered no clue as to the purpose of the vice president’s visit.

Since March, when she was appointed to manage the Biden administration’s response to the U.S.-Mexico border crisis, Harris has been regularly criticized by Republicans for not visiting the border region – to except for a brief trip to El Paso, Texas in June.

But during the same period, Harris made several trips to his home state of California, most notably on successive weekends between late June and early July.

Earlier this month, Harris campaigned for California Gov. Gavin Newsom in San Leandro, near San Francisco, as Newsom faced a recall election he ultimately survived to stay in office.

Friday’s rapid trip to the West came as Democrats in Congress tried to push President Biden’s economic agenda forward, in the form of a bipartisan $ 1,000 billion infrastructure bill and a so-called “reconciliation” bill of $ 3.5 trillion from other spending proposals.

Harris would potentially be needed on Capitol Hill if the Senate found itself deadlocked on a vote, but lawmakers went another day on Friday without any action on the proposals.
