Tesla has announced its production and delivery figures for the third quarter of 2021, confirming that it has largely exceeded Wall Street consensus estimates of 222,700 deliveries. Wall Street has predicted that the third quarter of 2021 will be Tesla’s “strongest ever” three-month performance, and there’s no doubt that’s true. Tesla has managed to continue its monumental growth streak for deliveries and production, seeing no decline in quarter-over-quarter numbers since the first quarter of 2019. Consensus estimates predicted Tesla would deliver 222,700 vehicles to the during the quarter, although some analysts were convinced the automaker would get there. to break into the low and mid range of 230,000.
Of the 241,300 vehicles delivered, 9,275 were Model S and Model X. The Model S Plaid is starting to see more regular deliveries, although Tesla is still dealing with some bottlenecks with the vehicle. The remaining 232,025 vehicles were Model 3 and Y. These are Tesla’s mainstream cars and account for a significant portion of deliveries each quarter. Models 3 and Y are produced at the Tesla factory in Fremont and the Giga Shanghai factory in China. However, the vehicles will soon be manufactured at the Gigafactory Texas and Gigafactory Berlin production lines, which will soon be completed. The Model Y will be produced primarily at these two factories, as it quickly became Tesla’s most popular vehicle.
As Tesla mentioned in its press release, the company has been forced to take on various challenges beyond its control. Since the start of the year, all automakers around the world have struggled with the semiconductor chip shortage, which has halted production of many vehicles across the automotive industry. Tesla was not immune to these issues, as he was forced to scramble to find solutions to the problem. The company announced in its last quarterly earnings call that it has developed numerous internal microcontrollers to deal with the shortage.
