Police are still seeking information on the suspect who shot six people at the Cedar Rapids hotel

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – An investigation into a shootout on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids on Friday night continues as police seek information on the alleged shooter.

On Saturday morning, the Cedar Rapids Police Department said it had not yet received any information from witnesses present during a shooting at the Ramada Inn, located at 525 33rd Avenue SW, on Friday. At approximately 10:29 p.m., officers were dispatched to the hotel after receiving several reports of gunfire.

Police said an announced birthday party, featuring several performers, was taking place in the hotel’s conference rooms. Unrest apparently started among some of the few dozen people present, resulting in the gunfire.

Three people were located by officers and taken to area hospitals with injuries. Officers described two of those people as suffering from non-life threatening injuries, but a third person was taken to University of Iowa hospitals and clinics with serious injuries.

Three other people, including a 13-year-old man, arrived at local hospitals with gunshot wounds via private vehicles. Their injuries were also described as not life threatening by the authorities.

“This senseless and inexcusable act is another example of people in our community making the conscious decision to use firearms illegally. Those who continue this illegal behavior must be held accountable, fully prosecuted and removed from our community, ”Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman said in a statement. “I want to salute the heroic actions of all law enforcement officers, emergency first responders, as well as medical staff in the hospitals where the injured were treated.
