Florida State leads Syracuse at halftime, 16-13: live score, updates

Tallahassee, Fla – The Syracuse football team will face the Florida State Seminoles at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Halftime: Florida State 16, Syracuse 13

Second quarter

0:12: A down throw from the right hash is broken, leaving 7 seconds on the clock and the ball at FSU 40. Syracuse uses his last half-time timeout to call a play.

Syracuse tries a quick pass to Tucker towards the sideline to get out of bounds and attempt a long field goal, but Tucker dropped the ball.

With 3 seconds remaining, Shrader sends one into the end zone and it’s half-time.

0h30: Syracuse, with two halftime timeouts remaining, is close to field goals following a Jackson catch-and-run for 26 yards.

After an incomplete on a screen, Syracuse called the time out with 12 seconds at halftime with the ball on the 40-yard line of the FSU.

Just for the record: Andre Szmyt’s long career is 54 yards.

1:19: Marlowe Wax is going to be flagged for a hands-high face on Travis, giving FSU another first down on the 27-yard SU line.

Treshaun Ward came out on the other side of the 20 with a stopwatch in less than a minute.

Travis fakes the short throw then finds Keyshawn Helton in the middle for a 14-yard touchdown.

SCORING: Florida State 16, Syracuse 13; 16 seconds remaining in the second quarter

2:33: Florida State’s best passing game was tight in the first half.

Florida State has the ball close to midfielder after a defensive pass interference penalty on Duce Chestnut on a knockdown that was intercepted by Jason Simmons Jr.

Florida State takes a time out with 1:19 left in the half with the ball at the Syracuse 42-yard line.

2:39: Shrader uses his strength to sink into the end zone on a quarterback keeper, and Syracuse wraps up another scoring campaign to take their first lead of the game.

Attendance today: 56,609.

SCORING: Syracuse 13, Florida State 9; 2:33 left in second quarter

4:11: Syracuse, starting at his 40s, rolls Shrader to the right after faking the gift to Tucker. Shrader finds Damien Alford for first straight downs on the Florida state 21-yard line.

Shrader follows Anthony Queeley’s pretty boulder, and SU knocks on the door.

6:21 am: Josh Black has been very good in the trenches this afternoon. He held up on Corbin’s run and Smurph Greenwood cleaned up the tackle for the loss to put FSU behind the sticks.

Terry Lockett, seeing more reps on the inside with Curtis Harper on the outside, bottled Travis in the 3rd and long run, and FSU will bring him back to Syracuse with about four minutes left in the first half.

6:21 am: Shrader shows how valuable he is with a 55-yard touchdown run to put Syracuse on the board.

Shrader escaped a transfer tackle attempt from Georgia Jermaine Johnson, the nation’s sack leader entering this weekend’s fixture list. Then Shrader slashed inside and outgrown the rest of the FSU defense.

Andre Szmyt misses the extra point.

SCORE: Florida State 9, Syracuse 6; 6:21 left in second quarter

7:34 am: Pena gives the field position to SU on the 30-yard line on the return from the kickoff.

Shrader stays at the quarterback and hands over to Tucker, who is arrested for a short gain. Shrader then saves time with his legs and finds Shardo Johnson sitting near the FSU sideline for a first try.

8:24 am: Syracuse has held firm in the red zone this season, but gave up a touchdown here on a 14-yard touchdown by tight end Camren McDonald, who broke through a pair of defensemen to cross the goal line.

Florida State misses the extra point.

SCORE: Florida State 9, Syracuse 0; 7:40 left in second quarter

9:33 am: Florida State will start off with their best field position of the game in midfield after a short punt from Ian Hawkins. Remember, the Orange is deprived of its best bettor, James Williams, who did not make the trip for undisclosed reasons.

Travis airs the first deep ball from the but is well ahead of Andrew Parchment, a transfer from Kansas.

Travis enters the red zone after making a nice cut against Stefon Thompson and Garrett Williams.

11:34 am: Another empty blow for the Orange, which does not do much in the first place against the Seminoles.

A pass in the wrong direction to Jackson isn’t going anywhere.

Amari Gainer then spies on Shrader to blow up a quarterback.

On the third and long, Shrader is hit as he throws, which was deemed a fumble, and Airon Servais pounced on it for another three-and-out.

2:05 p.m .: Travis sends one to Ward in the apartment, but his big chunk winning is canceled by a call on hold to delay the FSU.

After a short win, Kingsley Jonathan registered his first sack of the game to bring FSU 33 3rd and 20. This, as you might expect, ends horribly for the Seminoles, who will kick.

3:00 p.m .: Syracuse executed the ball in 10 of 12 games in the first quarter, but struggled to move the ball. He got nearly half his distance in the first quarter on a 15-yard face mask by the Seminoles.

First year catcher Oronde Gadsden II drops a crossing road on 3rd and 7. Penalty compensation will replay the down. The Orange have gone for bigger receivers in this series, but will hit after Shrader misses high trying to send a ball to Jackson in the middle.

First shift

End of first quarter: Florida State 3, Syracuse 0

1:46: A soft snap knocked FSU out of the program on the first try, and Stefon Thompson tossed Treshaun Ward. Travis uses his legs to pick up eight near the home sideline in the next game, but FSU will punt after being three-and-out.

1:50: A quick first quarter hits a key moment.

Syracuse, facing the 4th and 2nd of FSU 26, chose to go there rather than try the field goal in a first match 3-0.

SU goes heavy with Elmore and Max Mang in the match, but Tucker is stopped before the first down scorer.

6:04 am: Syracuse begins their second possession on their own 25 after a return from Pena.

Tucker gets six on his first carry over to the disc and is helped by a face mask penalty to push the ball close to midfield.

Shrader finds Courtney Jackson, starting at Harris, in the middle to convert a 3rd and 5 and enter Andre Szmyt’s placement range.

Jackson arrives about 2 yards after Shrader finds him under duress on another third down. Syracuse brings the stopwatch back to less than two minutes and calls the timeout.

8:22 am: Travis sneaks through the first row to convert another fourth here on the opening possession of ‘Noles’.

Josh Black saves the first TFL for the Orange front, gobbling up Corbin in the backfield to bring in the third and long.

Black almost knocked Travis down on the next play, but he is still well stopped first on the scorer on the first down.

FSU is content with a 35-yard field goal after a 17-play practice that covered 48 yards.

SCORE: Florida State 3, Syracuse 0; 6:12 remaining in first quarter

9:35 am: FSU spreading out the SU defense with bubbles on the edge. This will inspire linebackers and third-level defensemen to chase after a sticky day with temperatures approaching the 80s.

13:14: Jordan Travis starts the game as Florida State quarterback. Travis had come out with a shoulder injury.

The Seminoles move to midfield behind a solid run from Jashaun Corbin and a pair of wide screens at the perimeter.

A bad fall by Malik McClain on the third down is forgiven by an easy flair in Corbin for a conversion on the fourth down.

3:00 p.m.: Syracuse goes three-and-out to open the game.

Syracuse received the opening kickoff with Trebor Pena back on the pitch after missing last week’s game.

Pre-match notes

Good afternoon at Doak Campbell Stadium, where Syracuse takes on Florida State at 3:30 p.m.

A small call for presence:

Syracuse will be without four starters this afternoon.

Junior wide receiver Taj Harris and punter James Williams did not travel with the team and will miss today’s game.

Safety Ja’Had Carter has also not traveled after missing the past two weeks with an injury.

Defensive tackle Curtis Harper made the trip but hasn’t dressed and won’t play.

The Orange will benefit from the return of full-back Chris Elmore, who will adapt for the first time this season after missing the team’s first four games.

Tight end Luke Benson took part in the team’s pre-game warm-ups, after missing last week’s game with a leg injury.

Rob Konrad is also there.

The former Syracuse full-back and second-round pick for the Miami Dolphins in 1999 made the trip north to Tallahassee and will watch the game in athletic director John Wildhack’s sequel.

Konrad is the most recent player to wear number 44 for the Orange, in the Orange Bowl against Florida on January 2, 1999.

Given his stature in the history of the program, Konrad’s voice carries weight in the speech surrounding Sean Tucker wearing SU’s most legendary number.
