Los Angeles police shot dead a man with a knife near the famous Hollywood Blvd. Saturday as violent crime continues to rise across the country.

The LAPD spokesperson added that the man was taken to a local hospital and is currently in police custody.
The shooting comes the same week that the Federal Bureau of Investigation released crime statistics for 2020 that showed an increase in the number of murders nationwide.
The United States saw an almost 30% increase in homicides in 2020 compared to the previous year, according to the FBI, which represented the largest single-year increase in murders since the agency started tracking crimes.

Over 21,000 homicides were reported last year, 4,901 more than in 2019, the biggest jump since the 1960s. Overall, violent crime – which includes homicides, rapes, robberies and aggravated assault – increased 5.6% and property crimes decreased nearly 8%, according to FBI data.
The jump comes as several cities record record peaks in gun violence after decades of falling violent crime. The report showed that most of the violence involved guns. About 77% of reported murders were committed with a firearm.

Statistics released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff earlier this year showed a 200% spike in crime from the same time period in 2020.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told Fox News criminals are emboldened by the progressive policies of District Attorney George Gascón and stressed that people need to understand that such an election will have consequences.
“They really have to choose very carefully because for them it’s very easy to say ‘Oh yeah, all cops are bad’ and ‘Let’s reform and fund the police,'” Villanueva said. “Yet they’re the very first to pick up 911 when someone crawls over their back door trying to enter their house.”
