Penn State already had commitments of three 2022 class wide receivers at the time Omari evans made his first visit to Happy Valley at the end of June. His private training with the Nittany Lions staff was so impressive, however, that he left that day with an offer of James franklin. On Saturday afternoon, Evans announced his intention to join the Nittany Lions class, which currently ranks number one in the country.
The outstanding Kileen, TX athlete Shoemaker chose Penn State over Rutgers and Vanderbilt in a ceremony at his school. He made official visits to his other finalists over the summer and one to Happy Valley for the White Out’s win over Auburn in September. It is the 26th engagement of the Nittany Lions in the cycle.
Evans joins Kaden Saunders, Anthony Ivey and Tyler johnson to form one of the fastest groups of receivers engaged under Franklin. Mehki Flowers and Cristian Driver could also project to the post at the next level.
The 6-foot, 170-pound prospect was recruited by teams on both sides of the ball. He is the No. 103 cornerback in the country on the 247Sports Composite rankings and the No. 163 prospect in Texas. He has ranked a three-star prospect by both the Composite Rankings and the 247Sports Rankings, which places him as the No.73 cornerback prospect nationally.
Arkansas, Baylor, Boston College, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Houston, Indiana, Kansas State, Louisiana, Marshall, Maryland, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, SMU, Syracuse, Texas Tech, Utah, Virginia, Wake Forest, and Washington State are also offered.
Also a track and field star, Evans placed sixth as a junior in the Texas State 6A long jump competition with a jump of 23-1 3/4. His best distance in the spring was a 23-11 jump in Districts in April, where he also ran a 38.95 300 hurdles.
Evans caught the attention of Penn State on an unofficial visit on June 26, where he executed consecutive 40-yard dashes in a 4.3-second range for the staff. He also achieved a wide jump of almost 10 feet and a shuttle time of 4.2 seconds.
He played primarily as a quarterback out of necessity during his high school career. Friday night he ran for 251 yards and four touchdowns in a 58-35 win over Copperas Cove. He also had 9 of 11 passes for 112 yards and another score in the win.
