In a special show Airing at the Tokyo Game Show 2021 Online, Sega and Atlus showed new gameplay footage of Shin Megami Tensei V, scheduled for release in Japan on November 11, 2021. This demo differed from the show’s and published yesterday by IGN, and featured a protracted battle against a Red Ogre.
The player (a Japanese game author named Mafia Kajita, a self-identified fan of the series) explored a ruined sandy area of Tokyo, leading him to compare the sites to the famous Tottori Sand Dunes. Monsters roam the map freely and are not only visible but audible to the player; Masked Ippon-Datara moaned under their masks, making a horrible noise. Kajita has engaged in several small fights, showing a variety of attacks on weaker monsters, including a siren cry that can freeze enemies and shatter them if they are low on HP.
The battles of Shin Megami Tensei V are not all about fighting, as the player can choose at any time to try to talk to the demons and find a solution. Kajita met a trio of “Mad Birds” and immediately befriended one of them, ending the fight and finding a new member of the group at the same time. Other monsters needed to be more convincing: a cocked hat told the hero that he “smelled like a human”, prompting Kajita to choose the answer: “I ate their food”. The cocked hat was pushed back saying, “Human food is RAW”, so he passed it an antitoxin element and was quickly gone.
The encounter with the giant ogre began in conversation, as the beast boasted of his strength and ferocity before admitting a problem: he’s so strong and so scary, none of the other monsters will share their problems with him. him, they just run away. He tasked the player with finding out which monsters need his help, offering them a chance to become a “boss” in his organization. However, despite having spoken to several small creatures, none of them would admit it. Kajita came back to the ogre to tell him the news, and it infuriated him. He got out and threatened the other monsters, causing them to ask the player character for help, driving the ogre crazier and starting a battle.
The fight took a long time, as the ogre had so much HP that the game did not show the total number. Kajita wore out the cranky giant by exploiting his weak points (receiving additional combat actions) and putting him to sleep in such a way that he would miss his turns. The scheme didn’t hold up and the ogre was able to hit Kajita’s entire group for massive damage. Eventually, the time came to end the segment, but Kajita refused to put down the controller. The staff relented, giving him “five minutes” to complete the battle.
The extra time was barely enough to get the job done, as Kajita finished off the ogre, forcing him to admit he felt “ashamed” before running away. Not only did the little demons thank the player and reward him for the fight, the ogre also gave him a gift and the game considered this quest complete.
During a non-interactive segment, new footage was shown of a cutscene between four mighty demons. They each identified themselves as coming from different parts of the world: Egypt, Greece, Scandinavia and India. Each demon’s character design also matched their geographic origins. Kajita compared the scene to the Avengers, but also admitted that it was so short that he was unsure of its relevance to the story. Most of the schedule featured speculation about the game’s narrative, as staff admitted that very little information regarding the plot had been made public.
As the program concluded with release information and showcasing a deluxe edition, the UK broadcast team reminded audiences that local launch dates and packaging will vary by region. For the United States, Shin Megami Tensei V is scheduled to arrive on November 12, 2021.
