American Airlines, JetBlue and Alaska Airlines have joined United Airlines in demanding that employees be vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Why is this important: The Biden administration has pressured companies to demand that workers be vaccinated against the virus as vaccination rates flatten in the United States
- Airlines provide government services, including freight transportation and special flights, which they say make them government contractors so that they fall under President Biden’s mandatory vaccination directive, AP reports .
The big picture: American Airlines told staff on Friday it would require all US-based employees and “certain international crew members” to be vaccinated, per memo obtained by Reuters.
- The American memo gave no timetable. But JetBlue Airways and Alaska Airlines announced Friday that they would implement a vaccination mandate as early as December 8, AP notes. That’s the deadline the White House has given for vaccinating federal contractors, with a few exceptions.
- Delta said she was “still evaluating Biden’s order,” according to AP.
