“At best, I think it’s a connection between the early ‘Men in Black’ and ‘Pursuit of Happyness’. For various reasons, these are the two near-perfect films.”
Considering the least favorite, he said: “I don’t know – ‘Wild Wild West’ is a thorn in my side.”
He added with a laugh, “Seeing me as a guy – I don’t like that.”
The 1999 film starred Smith and Kevin Kline as two Secret Service agents who worked together to protect the President in 1869. Also starring Salma Hayek and Kenneth Branagh, the film was panned by critics and considered a business failure.
Smith initially introduced the role of Neo in “The Matrix,” but declined, later claiming he didn’t fully understand the concept after meeting writers and directors Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski. Smith chose to do “Wild Wild West” instead. The role of Neo ultimately went to Keanu Reeves.

In 2019, Smith said he regretted working on “Wild Wild West” on “The Matrix,” telling a reporter he’d like to go back in time on the set of “Wild Wild West” and ask himself: “A —– -, why didn’t you do ‘The Matrix?'”
That same year, he echoed the sentiments on his YouTube channel, saying he was not proud to have ignored the role of Neo.
“But Keanu was perfect. Laurence Fishburne was perfect. So I probably would have ruined ‘The Matrix’. I would have ruined it, so I did you a favor,” he joked.
