In the opening episode of the new season of Saturday Night Live, the cast members paid tribute to the former SNL cast member Norm Macdonald.
Macdonald died last month (September 14) at the age of 61, after a long illness with cancer. He was one of the most popular members of the longtime comedy show, often hosting the show’s “Weekend Update” slot.
Michael Che and Colin Jost devoted the last minute of their sketch to the classic moments of the actor.
These included jokes about Bill Clinton’s wedding, a poorly planned airport, and a building climber known as “Snakeman.” The edit ended with a clip of Macdonald delivering a sharp joke about OJ Simpson – something the comedian claims led to his withdrawal from the series in 1998.
Presenting the tribute, Jost said: “It’s a bittersweet night for us tonight. Norm is the reason I always wanted to do ‘Weekend Update’ and so tonight we thought we’d put in the latest jokes. from ‘Update’ to Norm.
Pete Davidson also paid his own tribute, wearing a Norm Macdonald t-shirt during another skit.
SNL creator Lorne Michaels paid tribute to Macdonald last month on behalf of the show, saying, “All of us here at SNL mourn the loss of Norm Macdonald, one of the most successful comedic voices of his generation or any generation.
“There is so much we will miss about Norm – from his unwavering integrity and generosity to his constant ability to surprise. But above all, he was just plain funny. No one was funny like Norm.
Macdonald was an actor on SNL from 1993 to 1998 and was best known for the show’s “Weekend Update” segments as well as his funny, deadpan style.
He was born on October 17, 1959 in Quebec, and began his career in the comedy clubs of Canada. He appeared as a candidate on Star search in 1990, after which he was hired to write for Roseanne Barr’s sitcom Roseanne between 1992-93. He joined SNL in 1993 and stayed there for five years.

After leaving SNL in 1998, Macdonald went on to star in his own comedy series, The spectacle of the norm which ran from 1999 to 2001. He also had a recurring role in The middle and has appeared on numerous late night chat shows over the years, including Late Night with David Letterman and Conan.
