In popular folklore, Texas has always been the place where everything is bigger, but China is increasingly usurping that title, especially when it comes to electric vehicles. To give just one example, as American and European cities begin to deploy electric buses in pilots of ten vehicles at a time, Chinese cities have been ordering electric buses by the thousands for several years.
We already know that Tesla relies on the world’s largest auto market for much of its future growth, and Elon Musk has been beating the Chinese in recent times. In a statement for the recent World Congress of New Energy Vehicles, he called Chinese automakers “the most competitive in the world.” More recently, in a video released as part of the World Internet Conference, he declared that China is “a global leader in digitization” and reaffirmed that “Tesla will continue to expand its investments and R&D efforts in China. “.
Some of that increased investment is on display at Tesla’s new delivery center in Beijing, said to be the largest in China, and possibly the world. The 120,000 square foot building has over 100 delivery spaces, and a first photo showed them full of new Y models.
The new facility is part of a large build-up of Tesla’s delivery infrastructure in China, as it begins delivering a new, cheaper version of the Model Y. The standard Model Y lineup (which is no longer available in the United States, alas), starts at 276,000 (about $ 42,500). The new price, enabled by a new government incentive for electric vehicles, is expected to lead to increased sales of the already popular Model Y.
Model Y shipments are also increasing with orders from outside of China. Gigafactory Shanghai becomes a major export hub for Tesla. Y models destined for Europe will likely come from Shanghai until the German Gigafactory is online.
Tesla China posted a video about the opening of the delivery center.
