Dr Anthony Fauci praised California Governor Gavin Newsom’s tenure to ensure all students receive a COVID-19 vaccine, arguing that this is not a “new” approach for schools.
California proudly announced the first-ever national requirement for a COVID-19 vaccine in schools. Newsom’s announcement compared the warrant to those for measles, mumps and rubella.
The tenure divided parents in the state, but Fauci applauded California’s decision, echoing California’s argument.

“I have been and still am in favor of these kinds of mandates,” Fauci told ABC’s “This Week”. “You can make a few exceptions for them, but in general people see it as something new and new when… we made the kids go to school to get different kinds of vaccines.”
“Getting vaccinated with certain vaccines is not something new,” he said. “It has been around for a very long time.”
Fauci’s appearances on Sunday morning broadcasts continued his drive to increase immunizations nationwide as the United States still lags behind its target number: about 56% of all Americans have been fully vaccinated, with at least 65% of all Americans having received at least one injection, according to data from USA Facts.

The lower than expected vaccination rate started to cause some concern ahead of the winter holiday season, which helped propel the country into its third wave of infections in 2020.
During an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Fauci urged caution when discussing what may or may not happen in the coming months.
“It’s just too early to tell,” Fauci said. “We need to focus on continuing to reduce those numbers and not try to move forward weeks or months saying what we’re going to do at some point.”

“Let’s focus like a laser on continuing to fight these cases. And we can do that by getting people vaccinated,” Fauci added.
Some officials have started touting a pill from Merck, which studies show could cut the risk of death and hospitalization in half. Fauci applauded the promise offered by the new pill, but worries some will see it as a miracle cure that will continue to cut vaccinations.

“It’s such a bogus story, if anybody says, well, now you have medicine,” Fauci said. “Remember, the easiest way to stay out of the hospital and not die is to not get infected. Don’t get sick.”
“I mean, this idea that we have a drug, don’t get vaccinated, that just doesn’t make sense.”
