Chocobo GP will feature at least 20 playable characters

At Square Enix’s Tokyo Game Show 2021 panel featuring Chocobo GP, Game Director Akihiko Maeda has revealed that the upcoming racing game will feature at least 20 characters. Although Maeda did not specify which characters will be included, he then asked fans what Final fantasy characters they would like to see in the game.

In addition, the presentation contains detailed information about Chocobo GPthe game mechanics of. These include upgrading magics like Fira to Firaga, as well as some character-specific abilities. Players can collect iconic magical spells like Aero, Fira, Doom, and even MBarrier while traveling through courses. Maeda notes that when players use these spells, a special marker will appear above their head. This gives nearby players a warning to move away or counter them with a MBarrier at the right time.

A submitted question asked Maeda about the possibility of future DLC maps and characters if Chocobo GP works well. He said it was “a good question” but did not respond. However, Maeda did mention that there will be at least 20 playable characters that Square Enix will reveal at a later date. Notably, Maeda did not say whether all 20 characters would be included at launch.

Chocobo GP will be released for the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2022.
