Queen Elizabeth recalled fond memories of her late husband Prince Philip during his speech at the opening of the Scottish Parliament on Saturday.

It was the first time the Queen had spoken publicly about her late husband since his death in April at the age of 99.

“I have already spoken of my deep and lasting affection for this wonderful country and the many happy memories Prince Philip and I have always kept from our stay here,” said the Queen. “It is often said that it is people who make a place and there are few places where this is truer than in Scotland, as we have seen in recent times.”

The Queen and the Duke have been married for 73 years.

The Queen once called Philip “strength and sojourn” in a speech in honor of the couple’s golden wedding anniversary, which marked 50 years together.

“He is someone who does not take compliments easily but he has simply been my strength and my stay for all these years, and I, and all his family, and this country and many others, owe him. a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we will never know, ”the Queen said on November 20, 1997.

Although the Queen did not comment publicly on Philip’s death at the time, her son, Prince Andrew, said his father’s death “left a big void” in his mother’s life.

Members of the royal family gathered for a pared-down funeral in honor of the Duke on April 17.

Mike Tindall, who is married to Princess Anne’s daughter Zara, said there were “strange” moments during the procession and funeral, the scope of which was limited due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think back to the day that I think as strange as it was without crowds and social distancing and the way it was all,” the former athlete said on his podcast, “The Good, The Bad & The Rugby “at the time. “I think it was the perfect day for how he would have liked it, if that makes sense.”
