The San Francisco Giants are champions of the NL West for the first time in nine years after finishing a 107-game winning season (a team record!) With an 11-4 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
The game was never really in doubt, which gave the scorecard makers at Oracle Park enough time to come up with some quality trolling effort.
You see, the game against the NL Wild Card was set up as the Giants got a head start on the Padres, ensuring they would move on to the NLDS. San Francisco’s victory precluded a potential NL West-top tie between the Giants and Dodgers, a scenario that would have triggered a one-game tiebreaker for the division, with the loser moving on to the Wild Card round to play. the St. Louis Cardinals.
So rather than continue to show the Dodgers’ scoreline in their regular season final against the Milwaukee Brewers – a game that made technically important to Giants fans until no longer – the scorecard operators have gone ahead and posted a very different contest, which has yet to be decided. They changed the dashboard to show “STL” and “LA”.
It is also just a fact! The Dodgers and Cardinals meet on Wednesday to decide who plays the Giants in the NLDS. I have a feeling, however, that the Oracle Park scorecard operators won’t faithfully update the Dodgers-Cardinals tally on Wednesday night.
