The New World reached nearly a million players on Sunday

As MMOs often do at launch, New World had busy servers and long queues to kick in last week. This certainly doesn’t stop people from trying to play, as New World has hit another high score for itself. It was already the most popular game on Steam last week with over 700,000 concurrent players. Yesterday, New World’s maximum player count was almost one million. We don’t know how many of these people are hanging out in those server queues, of course, but they are all at least trying to play.

According to today’s Steam stats, New World’s maximum player count reached 913,634 players at any given time today. SteamDB saves this number, putting that peak around 7 p.m. BST (11 a.m. PDT) on Sunday, October 3.

There has been quite a frenzy for New World since its launch. To help attract more players to the game, Amazon has taken all sorts of steps such as adding an AFK timer to start inactive players, adding more servers, disabling character creation on servers already full.

Apparently those #bignumbers were enough to make the corpo dad proud. Jeff Bezos tweeted friday calling New World a success, with a link to a CNBS article calling it a smash hit. “After a lot of setbacks and setbacks in the game, we have success,” Bezos said. “So proud of the team for persistence. See setbacks as useful obstacles that promote learning.”

One of those big setbacks was Amazon’s free-to-play shooter Crucible, which didn’t come close to the same number of concurrent players and was finally canned last November just a few months after it launched in May. .

Granted, I expected a low-key response from New World, really. Ed said his open beta didn’t convince him to give up on Final Fantasy XIV. Nor was I drawn to an MMO that seemed to use the aughts playbook, albeit with a bit of fresh action combat and modern embellishment. Color me wrong then, all 913,634 of you out there in Aeternum.
