The new video and stills of the iPhone 13 Pro are impressive. Also being able to record videos in ProRes is. At this time, the iPhone 13 Pro does not ship with ProRes enabled. Apple says it will arrive in an update this fall.
Pro ProRes Film Capture
Filmic Pro used the API to unlock or activate ProRes HQ recording with the Filmic Pro app, and the results are impressive. Watch the video and see for yourself. Obviously, the codec makes a big difference in picture quality, from details to less noise.
First impressions
Michael Tobin got his hands on the new update to the Filmic Pro app and has a great overview of working with ProRes files. He states that it took an hour to an hour and a half to transfer 160GB using the USB 2.0 Lightning cable. It is quite slow. Here’s where Apple should have decided to go with a USB-C connector. If I were a gambler I would wait for this to happen with the iPhone 14 Pro. Always save some juice for later.
ProRes flavors
The good news is that you don’t need to use ProRes HQ with Filmic Pro as it offers ProRes Proxy, ProRes LT, ProRes 422, and ProRes HQ. This is a big plus as HQ is overkill for a phone with max 1TB storage. Without testing I would think the benefits are low using HQ and use good old ProRes 422 for most shoots. Smaller file but still 10 bit 422.
ProRes is now available in the updated Filmic Pro app.
Challenges ahead
Having ProRes on an iPhone is pretty cool, but Apple seemed to have forgotten to remove these clips from the iPhone and put them in a computer. As Michael mentioned in the video, Lightning cables are USB 2.0 only and are the only real way to transfer those large files. Airdrop and iCloud are not designed for this type of file. Apple has work to do if ProRes is more than a new idea for future versions of the iPhone.
Having said that, my iPhone 13 Pro Max should arrive this week. I didn’t order early enough on release day, unfortunately. My alarm clock does not work when it is set for 4:45 am. ??
Still, I can’t wait to have an upgrade from the XR. I think it’s a good time for the one coming from a 3 year old phone.
