Pokemon fans are “disappointed” after new details questioned whether Pokemon Legends Arceus is actually an open world.
When Pokemon Legends Arceus was announced in February 2021, many couldn’t help but draw comparisons to the critically acclaimed title The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The vast lands of the Hisui region seemed to be Game Freak’s most ambitious project to date.
New details about the 2022 game, however, have left fans wondering if the RPG is actually going to be an open world. The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch release can actually be linear, with fragmented sections similar to the wilderness area of Sword & Shield, which has disappointed some gamers.
Isn’t Pokemon Legends Arceus an open world?
As murmurs about the actual game design have been bubbling up since August, the discussion has gone viral after Serebii’s Joe Merrick tweeted about it. The popular Pokemon veteran explained why they believed Legends Arceus wouldn’t be “completely” open-world.
“It’s becoming more and more clear that Pokémon Legends Arceus may not be a full open world, but rather segmented open areas like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Monster Hunter, etc. separated into different areas like Wilderness / Crown Tundra. ” he said.
Merrick included screenshots from the game that showed the map split into a smaller area. The theory gained momentum after fans approached the information on the official Game Freak site.

I agree with that really. pic.twitter.com/llpCUUvQGx

In the Site Features section, it says, “Completing tasks will also help your work with the Galaxy Expedition Team and increase your rank as a team member, giving you access to new areas. The “access to new areas” in particular has left some fans speculating that the game will indeed be divided into sections rather than being entirely open-world.
Will Pokemon Legends Arceus be linear?
Pokemon YouTuber ‘aDrive’ addressed the theory in its October 1 download and pointed out that the Wardens and Frenzied Noble Pokemon also appear to be linked to progression, each of which resides in its own section of the Hisui region.
“It is starting to become very clear to us that Legends Arceus will not be [like Breath of the Wild]. As it looks like these Guardians and various Noble Pokémon are going to block our progress. And it looks like we’re going to have to do it in a specific order, ”he said.

If the theory is true, the game would still technically have large open-world segments, however, players would have to load into nested sections and would be prevented from exploring the entire map. Fans got a taste of this design before with Sword & Shield DLC, The Crown Tundra.
It should be pointed out that the owner of Serebii was only sharing his thoughts and not saying that it would be 100% so. Interestingly, Nintendo never used an “open world” in any of the Pokemon Legends of Arceus marketing or trailers. Only time will tell if this comes to fruition, but we can imagine that some fans will be disappointed if it ends up being the case.
