Following the historic IATSE strike authorization vote, SAG-AFTRA leaders are calling on Hollywood employers to hear their workers’ complaints and embrace “more conscious capitalism.”

“The results of the IATSE strike authorization vote are a resounding call for fairness, dignity and respect in the workplace,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher and National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree -Ireland in a joint statement. “IATSE’s frustrations with employers need to be heard and producers need to adjust to more conscious capitalism. Profit at the expense of things of real value like honor, respect and appreciation has no place in contemporary times. The 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA are with IATSE at every stage of the process.

IATSE members overwhelmingly approve of the strike authorization; AMPTP says it “remains committed to reaching an agreement”

“Conscious capitalism” is a phrase that Drescher has used before.

IATSE members, in an overwhelming display of union solidarity, voted over 98% in favor of granting their president, Matthew Loeb, the power to call a strike if he and the AMPTP president , Carol Lombardini, fail to come to a fair deal. They are expected to resume negotiations on Tuesday for the first time in more than two months.

Many IATSE members and their supporters portrayed the union’s fight as a fight for basic human rights: for meal breaks; reasonable rest; secure retirement and health benefits; and significant increases for the lowest paid among them, some of whom only earn a few dollars an hour more than minimum wage. The union also wants a greater share of the revenue from streaming shows for its members.
