Well, for every person that’s happy, ten more are pissed off. Probably. In a digital presentation this morning, Masahiro Sakurai finally unveiled the final fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is Sora, of Kingdom Hearts. It will be available on October 18.

Sora is the latest in a long line of bladed fighters in Smash bros. It is apparently lighter than Animal crossing‘s Isabelle, and can be launched easily accordingly. Her basic attacks are a bit slower than other sword fighters, like Lucina or Marth, but you can hold down the basic attack button to perform multi-move combos. Plus, his aerial combos look bonkers.
For special moves, Sora can cast magic. (The standard special attack cycles between fire, lightning, and ice spells, which you can see indicated above your damage counter.) He can also perform a quick attack, Sonic Blade, which seems essential for chain attacks. Above all, he can rush after using his up-B — extremely useful for getting back on stage. Finally, it has a counter, in case you don’t have enough of those in all Fire emblem fighters.
Sora’s scene looks a lot like the final destination except for an additional floating platform.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the ultimate in Nintendo’s long line of party fighting games, bringing together characters and stages from previous entries alongside a bunch of new ones. Principally, Ultimate presents heroes of Fire emblem, but some non-Nintendo stars are also included. Think: Cloud of Final fantasy or Pac-Man from Pac-Man.

The game was released in 2018 with a bajillion metric character roster. The DLC made new characters and stages available on a piecemeal basis, or lumped them together with a slight markdown in so-called Fighter’s Passes, to the point where the game expanded to a point.a metric bajillion characters. The first Pass added Joker (Anybody), hero (Dragon Quest), Banjo & Kazooie (Banjo-Kazooie), Terry (king of fighters), and Byleth (Fire emblem), while the second, so far, has introduced Oh dear (Arms), Steve and Alex (Minecraft), Sephiroth (Final fantasy), Pyra / Mythra (Chronicles of Xenoblade), and Kazuya (Tekken). Longtime nemesis of Mario’s Piranha Factory is also available, albeit outside the fighter’s passes.
Players have long speculated on who would get the last slot. Last month, during a ballad Nintendo Direct Showcase that many thought they would pull the curtain back, Nintendo said, “lol, gotcha!” and passed the ball to a dedicated Ultimate smash showcase. (This is not for nothing: during this same event, Nintendo announcement an announcement on Animal Crossing: New Horizons scheduled for some time this month.) For the betting crowd, here’s a short list of characters that many observers thought could be included:
- Bird
- Tingling
- Goku
- Master chef
- Someone of Fortnite…I think?
- Leon Kennedy
- Joe the spectator
- Dante
- Nintendo executive in bad costume
- A Nintendo executive in good costume
- The purple-clad Paragon alter ego of Mario’s much prettier brother
But no. It’s Sora. It will be available alongside several Mii Fighter costumes, including some from splash and Loss, which will be available on October 18 for $ 0.75 each.
