The Taliban on Tuesday hung the corpses of three suspected criminals from public view in Afghanistan – a shocking demonstration reminiscent of the Islamic militant group’s brutal regime in the late 1990s.
The suspected criminals were killed by a man after trying to break into his home, Deputy Governor Mawlawi Shir Ahmad Muhajir told AFP.
Their corpses were hoisted from two cranes in the Obe district, northeast of Herat.
The gruesome scene was similar to another public hanging of a dead body in Herat’s central plaza less than two weeks ago.
In the previous case, the person was among four suspected criminals who were killed by police while attempting to kidnap a father and son.
The other three bodies were on display in other parts of the city.
“The purpose of this action is to alert all criminals that they are not safe,” an unidentified Taliban told The Associated Press of the September hangings.
The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August, two weeks before the United States withdrew its troops from the war-torn country.
When die-hard insurgents controlled Afghanistan from 1996-2001, they brutally enforced Islamic law by chopping off the hands of thieves and stoning adulterers.
