A southern California man who was on the run after killing one person and shooting two relatives over the weekend was killed by law enforcement officials Monday on a busy highway, authorities said.

Jesse Medrano, 35, was shot and killed around 8:40 a.m. in the Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood. The California Highway Patrol did not disclose many details about the shooting.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday’s shooting occurred on Interstate 105, near the interchange with Interstate 710. A spokesperson for Highway Patrol said the agency had received a call just before 7 am about a broken down vehicle on the highway.

A CHP officer who responded checked the license plate of the vehicle, which came back as being reported stolen.

The MP ran the information from Medrano, which indicated that he was wanted in connection with a homicide. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies also arrived at the scene before the shooting, the CHP said.

At one point, Medrano pulled out a handgun and opened fire on law enforcement, Fox affiliate KTTV reported.

The police responded, hitting the suspect. Medrano was taken to hospital where he later died. A CHP officer was injured in the head by shrapnel and was treated on the spot.

Footage from a Fox Los Angeles helicopter showed the suspect on the freeway holding what appeared to be a handgun.

A 51-year-old man has been listed in serious condition, LAPD told Fox News, and a 50-year-old woman was in critical condition. The department did not disclose Medrano’s relationship with the victims.
