Former FDA commissioner said summer peak is likely the latest COVID-19 wave to hit the United States

TThe summer spike in COVID-19 cases, mainly due to the delta variant, was the last major wave of the pandemic to hit the United States, the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner said on Monday.

Cases are increasing in some states, but decreasing in southern states, and this pandemic wave has run its course across most of the country, he said.

“I think this Delta wave is probably the last major wave of SARS-CoV-2 infection that we have in the United States, unless something unexpected happens,” said Scott Gottlieb, author of Uncontroled Spread, in a book on the US response to the pandemic.

“It has traveled widely across the United States, and so maybe on Thanksgiving, we’ll start to see prevalence levels nationwide on a more uniform scale,” Gottlieb said.

A signal from the direction of the pandemic is how it will affect the northeastern states, where cases are expected to increase despite this region being the most heavily vaccinated, Gottlieb added.

“I still think Delta is going to sweep the northeast,” he said.

The difficulty is getting the rest of the world vaccinated, said Gottlieb, a member of the board of directors of Pfizer Inc ..

“The challenge is going to be to get the cast to the field in hard-to-reach environments, and that’s where there’s really no focus,” he said.
