The bot is developed using the same technology used in the iBot mobility device. It will feature secure technology for pedestrians, multiple cameras, LiDAR and machine learning to help detect and avoid obstacles and navigate uneven surfaces.
FedEx does not expect the bot to replace its existing same-day delivery services, but will complete them. Trials will begin this summer in a number of areas, including Memphis, Tennessee (awaiting city approval) and between FedEx Office offices. The company already has AutoZone, Pizza Hut, Target and Walmart on board for the first tests.
FedEx is the latest addition to a range of companies experimenting with this type of technology. While companies like Amazon and Google have focused on air drones for future deliveries, others, including food retailers, have been working on similar sidewalk technology. However, FedEx has a huge global reach. As long as it can overcome the legal hurdles faced by other companies innovating in this area, its scale could be what will eventually send the mainstream to autonomous delivery robots.
