Windows 11 has finally arrived. Microsoft’s new operating system began deployment to eligible devices on Tuesday, October 5, and the upgrade is free if you are already using Windows 10. However, Microsoft is rolling out the operating system in phases, which means that some people will not have the upgrade prompt yet. A blog post published in August by Microsoft said the company expects “all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022.” But you don’t have to wait: go to the Windows 11 installation wizard. Read on if you want to skip the line.

If you’re in no rush, however, the Windows 11 update will roll out to your device over the next few months when data from Microsoft indicates that the upgrade is ready for that device. When the new operating system is available, the upgrade process will look like a normal Windows 10 update, as long as your device is compatible and meets minimum requirements necessary. (And even if it isn’t, Microsoft will offer a workaround but it will not be supported by the company.)

Some users can download Windows 11 the same way you would get any new version of Windows. Just go to Settings> Update & Security> Windows Update and click Check for updates. If available, you will see Feature update to Windows 11. Click on Download and install.

However, note that the Windows 11 deployment will be slow – it may take months before it is available on your device. New PCs will receive the upgrade first, and all compatible devices are expected to receive it by mid-2022, depending on the age and hardware of the device.

If the upgrade isn’t available to you yet, don’t panic. You still have a few options for upgrading. The best and easiest option will be to download the Windows 11 installation wizard. To run after downloading to make sure your hardware is compatible. Then Accept and install to accept the license terms and begin the installation. When the program installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Your PC may restart several times during the installation finishing process, so don’t worry. Just keep your PC on until it’s all done.

If you can’t use the Windows 11 setup wizard, you have a few backup options, but be aware that these are more complicated solutions. We strongly recommend that you consider waiting for the update to arrive on your device. If you are sure you want to continue, you can create a Windows 11 installation media or an .ISO file. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page explains these steps in more detail.
