Is it time for him to go?
Here are four words no baseball fan ever wants to hear: The game is on ESPN.
The MLB Wildcard Playoffs are set to be the most exciting games of the year, but they’re not when Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez are on the call. The pair (along with reporter Buster Olney) are a chore to listen to on Sunday night baseball during the regular season. These shows look like a baseball talk show competing with the game being played on the field, but the lack of focus on the game itself is not the fault of the guys in the booth. (It’s a production decision made by ESPN’s superiors.) What really makes these games unbearable is A-Rod’s weird ability to repeatedly repeat some of the strangest things imaginable.
Whether he is talking about “even tracks against odd tracks”, do not mark the insurance races to allow your closest one who is struggling to prove himself or to slip into. Shark aquarium mode to designate the reconstruction of a team as a “leveraged buyoutYou can always count on A-Rod to say something that will make your head spin. That’s why, even though I’m a Yankees fan and they play a lot of Sunday night games every year, I rarely watch. It’s also why I was grateful to ESPN for airing an alternative Statcast-focused show with Jason Benetti, Eduardo Pérez and Mike Petriello on ESPN2 on Tuesday night. Anyone who’s listened to the main show on ESPN has been treated to a real drivel from A-Rod.
“A strange time in the game to ask this question” basically sums up the experience of watching ESPN’s best baseball team. For example, here’s what A-Rod was talking about with two outs in the ninth.
Not only is this the worst time to start making predictions about next year, but he hasn’t even been able to clarify his facts.
Reading all the reactions to Rodriguez’s night Made me feel like I made the right decision in going for the Statcast version of the game. While this show certainly wasn’t perfect (the amount of information thrown at you can be a bit overwhelming) , at least it made me feel smarter, which is the opposite of what it feels like to watch A-Rod and Vasgersian.
The problem with A-Rod is that he’s a baseball genius who’s quite capable of great analysis—New York Post sports media columnist Andrew Marchand shouted his talk about the questionable decision to send Aaron Judge around third in sixth, but a three or four hour game gives him too much time to fill himself with meaningless bullshit. The reason he’s on the ESPN booth is because he was fantastic as a studio analyst for Fox. He was even nominated for an Emmy! But he’s hard to listen to as a color commentator. I’m not sure if the broadcast style is to blame or if it just isn’t cut out to be an advertiser. But something has to change, because these ESPN games are just plain brutal.
