This Friday, Nintendo will launch its latest in-the-wild game system – the Nintendo Switch OLED model. You’re probably already familiar with the more obvious changes to the new model, like its gorgeous OLED display (all the info you could possibly need on these changes can be found here), but how does it go? to feel? What is it actually to play? And is it worth your money?
We checked out the new OLED model over the past week and shared our full review on the site earlier today. We described it as a worthy upgrade of the standard Switch, praising the new screen, improved audio, better docking station, and improved kickstand, but cautioned that those who only play with their console in docked mode won’t really see much of it.
Our review covers every aspect of the system, including its overall design, screen, and new dock, so we urge you to read (or watch, below) before you dive in.
Ended? Attractive. Now that you’ve seen what we have to say, let’s see what a handful of other reviewers have noted:
The Verge described the new system as “the most premium portable experience” within the Switch family of systems:
“The Switch Lite is the obvious entry point, a cheaper model and designed explicitly for portable gaming with its small size and sturdy build. The base Switch, meanwhile, is decent on the go but better for those who want to go. will use it primarily as a home console, which makes the new model the best of both worlds. For an extra $ 50, it works like a typical home switch, but its excellent OLED display and finally working kickstand make it too. the most premium portable experience.
Eurogamer called the OLED a “must-have upgrade” for fans of the portable mode:
“We don’t know when Nintendo will deliver a next-gen Switch console, but until then, the new OLED model is the best way to take advantage of the machine’s excellent library of games. Switch and you’re looking to buy one, this is the one for you. And if you’re already a Switch owner and portable display quality is important to you, this is the one for you. an essential upgrade.
The Independent says the OLED Switch is “the best version of the console yet”:
“… If you’re new to Nintendo Switch and haven’t bought one before, this is absolutely the best version of the console yet. Of course, it might not be the pro model. that we were all hoping to see, but its colorful display, better build quality, and more storage make it a no-brainer. New to Nintendo? Buy the Switch OLED console and never look back. “
IGN called it an “easy recommendation” for those who don’t yet own a Switch, but a “harder sell” for those who do:
“After playing with it for a week, I found that the brighter, more vibrant, and slightly larger screen of the Nintendo Switch OLED model made me want to take it out of docked mode a lot more often – and not just when I’m on to travel. I feel more encouraged to lounge on the sofa or even in direct sunlight in the yard and play portable games. The revised kickstand makes it easier to play on any flat surface, and Ethernet docking station speeds up downloads. harder to sell for current Switch owners, especially those who mostly keep their console docked, there are enough revisions to make this an easy recommendation for anyone who doesn’t own already from Switch. “
And finally, ArsTechnica called it “Nintendo’s most enjoyable and least essential upgrade yet”:
“The more expensive OLED Switch will appeal to people who want to feel like they did when they first launched the PlayStation Vita. This beautifully calibrated new Switch display is as good as I’ve ever seen in a dedicated gaming handheld, even surpassing the handsome Vita. And unlike the smartphone world, no one is faced with higher refresh rates or panels bright enough to add HDR to the mix. “
So what do you think? Have you been persuaded to take one? Or do you think it wouldn’t be worth it depending on how you like to play? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.
