Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore is free to find a new home. Former NFL Defensive Player of the Year confirmed his release from the New England Patriots on Wednesday, and he already has a new destination in mind.
According to an NFL reporter Albert Breer, Gilmore has his eyes on the Green Bay Packers.
“I heard he wanted to play for the Packers, and I heard there might have been some communication through top players,” Breer said in an appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Zolak & Bertrand.
Gilmore spent the entire 2021 season on the roster physically unable to perform after undergoing surgery to repair a torn quad in December.
According to ESPN, the Patriots and Gilmore couldn’t agree on a restructured contract. Doug Kyed Pro Football Focus reported that New England attempted to trade Gilmore before deciding to release him.
“I am grateful to Stephon Gilmore for his important contribution to our team. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to coach Steph ”, head coach of the Patriots Bill Belichick said in a report.
Four times Pro Bowler and twice in the All-Pro First Team, Gilmore is one of the best cornerbacks in the league when he’s in good health. He was slated to earn a base salary of $ 7 million this season, and he expressed dissatisfaction with his contract by skipping the mandatory Patriots minicamp in June.
While they don’t have Gilmore on the roster, the Patriots currently sit fourth in the NFL in passing defense, allowing just 185.0 yards per game. New England have JC Jackson and Jalen Mills as starting cornerbacks, with Jonathan Jones working the slot.
If Gilmore is genuinely interested in joining Green Bay, he would be a welcome addition to the squad. The Packers starting cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Kevin King are both hobbled and viewed as questionable for this week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Gilmore is eligible to come back off the PUP list in week 6.
