The University of Scranton hosted the 2021 Medical Alumni Council (MAC) Symposium virtually on October 2.
The full-day event featured presentations on a variety of CME topics by accomplished alumni as well as a panel discussion from MAC members. The full symposium will soon be broadcast on The Alumni Society’s YouTube channel; check out future Royal News installments for a link to the full conference.
The symposium featured the following presentations by alumni:
“Treating the Whole Patient: Where Medicine and Dentistry Converge” by Patrick Donnelly, DMD, Ph.D. ’09, General Dentist, Cipriani Dental Associates
“Managing Anxiety in a Clinical Office Setting: Improving Comfort and Outcomes During Routine Medical and Dental Visits” by Kevin Brazill, DO, FAPA ’95, Medical Director, John D. Kelly Mental Health Clinic, Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital, Finger Lakes Health
“New Therapeutic Approaches and Patient-Directed Care in Sickle Cell Disease: Past, Present, and Future” by Scott Peslak, MD, Ph.D. ’06, Instructor, Division of Hematology / Oncology, University of Pennsylvania
“Ethics, Politics and Orthopedic Surgery” by John Mercuri, MD, MA Bioethics ’07, Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction, Geisinger Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
The symposium also included “Scranton Shorts” videos designed to give viewers an overview of a specific area of medicine or research. Presentations included “Pediatric eye care with Angela Croteau Marx, OD ’07,“”Medical parenting in a pandemic with Julie Krcmaric, MA, NCC ’07,“”Summer Neuroscience Research Experience: Oxytocin and Heroin Addiction with Jacob Shomali ’22,” and “Covid & Medical Training: The New Abnormal with Christopher Kustera ’15, G’17, Kate Musto ’20 and Sara Wierbowski ’19.“
The event also featured opening remarks from April Troy, MDMPH, FAAP ’02, a general pediatrician at Pediatrics of Northeastern Pennsylvania and clinical assistant professor at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. Troy’s introduction completed her term as chair of the MAC executive committee, and she rose to past chair. Joseph Butash, MD’07, emergency physician at St. Luke’s University Health Network, delivered the symposium farewell speech as his first act as chair of the MAC executive committee.
