49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a pre-practice injury report for Wednesday. Here’s a look at the players who won’t dress:
Jimmy Garoppolo (calf)
George Kittle (calf)
Trent Williams (shoulder
Samson Ebukam (hamstrings)
K’Waun Williams (calf)
Limit
Javon Kinlaw (knee)
Elijah Mitchell (shoulder)
Josh Norman (chest)
Garoppolo said he’s preparing like he’s going to play – except practice during the week. He said he will have to fight his calf injury on Sunday if he is allowed to play and that the decision to dress could go until the time of the game.
Jimmy said Kerry Hyder’s knee hit his calf as he pushed to kick off the first set, and that’s when the injury happened: “It’s not terrible now. A little put in an awkward position. “I would probably be fighting. We will take it day by day. It hurts. But that’s what he is right now. “
Jimmy said he hopes he can return to training on Thursday.
Kyle Shanahan says Jimmy Garoppolo’s calf feels better today and doctors have recommended “give him another day, he has a chance.” Without Garoppolo’s training, Trey Lance will receive all reps with the starters today.
So Garoppolo’s calf is better, but not good enough to train, but it’s not bad enough to rule him out against the Cardinals game on Sunday.
Shanahan said: “If Jimmy is sent off I will rule him out… It is always advantageous if you don’t know which quarterback you are planning, but if there is no chance I will rule him out.”
As for Lance, here’s what Shanahan said after watching the movie about him:
” It develops. That’s what you’ll see when he comes out on game day … thought when he was thrown into battle there … thought he felt more comfortable as the game went went on … thought there was a lot of hopeful things.
He will see things he has never seen. But he can compensate with his athletic abilities and his quality as a football player.
“I thought he had done better than in pre-season. I know he had a rough start with his first two assists, but he calmed down, played it easy after that. It wasn’t perfect, but … he didn’t lock himself up. He was playing football and he gave us a chance to win.
The 49ers are in a bit of a tough spot. Lance will get valuable reps with the starters if Jimmy can’t train. Does that mean Shanahan is making a game plan for Lance since he’s been training all week? Or is the hope that on Sunday Jimmy’s calf will be much better and that you ride with the quarterback you named a starter to open the season?
If we have to wait until game time to determine if Garoppolo will play, letting him rest this Sunday with the 49ers off week ahead seems like the most practical thing to do.
As for Stephon Gilmore, Shanahan said, “We’ve looked at everything, but obviously we haven’t.”
