Humboldt County Public Health has reported the deaths of three residents over the age of 80 from COVID-19. One hundred and one local residents have died from the virus. Staff at the Department’s Operations Center share their condolences with friends, family and caregivers of the deceased.
Thirty-five new cases were reported in the county today, bringing the total number of county residents who have tested positive for the virus to 8,765. Two hospitalizations were also reported, including a person in their 40s and a person in their 60s.
Humboldt County Public Health and other local vaccinators on Tuesday administered a total of 155,473 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. An additional 958 residents have been fully vaccinated since the last weekly report on September 29. A total of 77,688, or just over 65% of the vaccine-eligible population aged 12 and over, are fully immunized. Just over 72% of the vaccine-eligible population received at least one dose.
Johnson & Johnson announced yesterday that it is seeking clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the emergency use of its COVID-19 vaccine for booster injections. The FDA Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Related Biologics is scheduled to meet Oct. 14-15 to review applications from Johnson & Johnson as well as Moderna, who submitted initial data in support of boosters to the FDA on September 1st. At the meeting, the committee will discuss data on the use of a different booster dose than that used in the primary series, or what is known as “mixing and matching” of vaccine brands. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
Given the level of transmission of COVID-19 in the community, residents – especially unvaccinated people – are advised to get tested if they have symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for the virus. .
Free tests are available through OptumServe seven days a week at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka and at mobile test sites across the county most days of the week. To make an appointment, visit lhi.care/covidtesting or call 888-634-1123. Processing times for test results via OptumServe average two to three days.
Vaccination and testing services are available free of charge in Humboldt County. All eligible residents are encouraged to get vaccinated against the virus, the most effective way to prevent hospitalization or death.
Appointments for Public Health vaccination clinics are not mandatory but are now highly recommended due to a recent increase in demand for additional doses and reminders. Pfizer is licensed for persons 12 years of age and over, and Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are licensed for persons 18 years of age and over. County residents between the ages of 16 and 17 can get vaccinated at public health clinics without the physical presence of a parent or guardian as long as they have a signed consent form. Children under 16 must always be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.
