MISSION, Texas – Members of the Mexican cartel dressed in military-style uniforms and carrying AK-47 rifles mocked US soldiers posted to the southern border in an unprecedented act of aggression, officials in Texas said.
“What actually happened last week is we see a bunch of people going through – they’re smuggling people – but what they’re doing is they’re going through the river in the United States and smuggle people, they go back to Mexico, and they get their weapons, ”Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lt. Christopher Olivarez said on Wednesday.

“These are assault rifles, OK, AK-47s. They will stand in the middle of the river and then they will brandish their guns and mock the National Guard, which is on the other side of the US side, ”Olivarez said.
Such threats did not happen until this week. Brandon Judd, national president of the Border Patrol Union, said on Wednesday that cartels profit more than $ 400 million each month from human trafficking at the border.

Mexican men still wear tactical vests and carry high powered rifles, said Olivarez, who speaks on behalf of state soldiers assigned to the border as part of Operation Lone Star.
The international border is in the middle of the river, so the men are not on American soil.
Olivarez said US troops would be allowed to take lethal action, including fire, in self-defense “if they threaten the National Guard or raise this weapon.”

Earlier this week, several miles away in the town of McAllen, five people were shot dead in a shootout that Olivarez said crossed the border from the Mexican town of Reynosa and involved Mexican cartel agents and Mexican officials.
