Pharrell Williams has announced that his Something in the Water festival will not return to his hometown of Virginia Beach in 2022, which he shared in a letter to City Manager Patrick Duhaney released today (October 6). In the letter, Williams cited “toxic energy” in local government, highlighting the March death of her 25-year-old cousin, Donovon Lynch. A Virginia Beach police officer, whose body camera was not on, shot and killed Lynch in controversial circumstances.

In the wake of Lynch’s death, Williams has repeatedly denounced the city’s failures to adequately answer questions about the shooting. He cited Something in the Water, which last took place in 2019, as an important force to help build community and bring more economic activity to Virginia Beach. His last letter was a response to Duhaney’s in late September, according to local media WAVY. City officials have expressed disappointment with the outcome.

“The manager and I want to connect with Pharrell, sit down and chat and that’s what we’re going to take. We’re going to try to be positive about it and we’re going to try to make the case that, you know, we’re moving forward, ”Virginia Beach Mayor Bobby Dyer told WAVY.

Williams has not revealed more details about Something in the Water’s future in the short or long term.
