‘Squid Game’: Netflix edits hit show after including real phone number

Kim Gil-young runs a dessert shop in Seongju County and has used the number for 16 years, she told CNN on Thursday.

When the hugely popular South Korean drama “Squid Game” was first released, Kim said she received thousands of calls a day. Over the past few days, she has received hundreds of calls and texts, she said.

It seriously disrupts her life, she said, explaining that she was now taking medication to calm her nerves after a doctor diagnosed her with acute stress disorder.

“I can’t concentrate because unknown numbers are calling me repeatedly,” she told CNN.

Actor Lee Jung-jae plays Seong Gi-hun.

Netflix confirmed to CNN that it edited scenes that included the phone number.

“Together with the production company, we are working to resolve this issue, including editing scenes with phone numbers if necessary,” the company said in a statement to CNN Thursday.

CNN has reached out to Netflix for further comment on Kim’s situation.

Kim said she initially took the number for her personal line, but started using it to run her business when she opened her dessert shop a year and a half ago.

Since the release of “Squid Game,” she has been unable to do business with the phone number, she said. However, she says she can’t give up.

"Squid set" launches a new game, trying to figure out why it took off on Netflix

“I have had former customers who called complaining that they couldn’t reach me. A caller asked for the product but when I offered it he said he was joking and hung up,” said Kim.

“I can’t tell the difference between a real business call and prank calls.”

The show tells the story of a game in which heavily indebted competitors play children’s games in order to win a huge cash prize. The downside is that the losers will be killed.

Although it arrived on the streaming service with virtually no fanfare, “Squid Game” has become what Netflix describes as possibly its “greatest show of all time.”

Kim said an anonymous caller asked her if her number was the one to play the “Squid Game”. She also reports having received numerous text messages containing profanity, including a message calling her a “bitch”.

One person called and asked her to make him one of the show’s coveralls agents, while others asked to join the game, she said.

Kim said she spoke to a representative of the show, who said the situation was unforeseen and offered her one million South Korean won ($ 840) in compensation to pay for a new phone.

However, Kim said the offer was not enough given the phone number was being used for business purposes and she had already paid for ads with the numbers on it.

“They said they were sorry but honestly I don’t know if they are really sorry. I wonder if they would have reacted the same if I hadn’t been an individual but a big company,” Kim said.

“In my opinion, the show is number one in the world and made a lot of money. But they told me they were in a difficult position too.”
