Andrew Lloyd Webber is not a fan of the film adaptation of his musical, Cats.
Almost two years after the film’s release, the 73-year-old composer called it “all wrong” during an interview with Variety this week. He admitted that he didn’t like the movie so much that he got him to buy a dog.
“Cats was completely wrong, “he said.” There wasn’t really any understanding of why the music worked. I saw it and I just thought, ‘Oh, my God, no.’ It was the first time in my 70 or so years on this planet that I had gone out and bought a dog. So the only good thing that comes out is my little Havanese puppy. “
After keeping each other company throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Lloyd Webber added that he is ready to bring his new puppy to Broadway when the time comes.
“I wrote off and said I needed him with me at all times because I’m emotionally damaged and need to have this therapy dog,” he said. Variety. “The airline responded and said, ‘Can you prove you really need him? And I said ‘Yeah, just watch what Hollywood did to my musical Cats. ‘ Then the approval came back with a note saying, “No doctor’s report required. “”

This isn’t the first time Lloyd Webber has spoken of his distaste for the 2019 film – which starred Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson and James Corden.

Webber is listed as executive producer of the film and teamed up with Swift to write an original song for the film called “Beautiful Ghost”. While he voiced his problems with the film, others involved in the project continued to defend him against mixed reviews.
In August, Hudson said she believed the live-action adaptation of the hit Broadway musical was “misunderstood.”

“You know what? I think it was a little overwhelming. It’s a shame that was misunderstood,” Hudson told the outlet. “I think later people will see it differently. But it’s something I’m still very proud and grateful to have been a part of. Yeah, I must be Grizabella the glamorous cat!”

The Oscar winner has even since adopted two cats she named after her character and Macavity, played by Idris Elba.
“These are the best things I have ever had,” she said of her pets. “I love them so much.”
