Netflix is under pressure to pull off Dave Chapelle’s anti-trans offensive “comedy” amid mounting condemnations from GLAAD, the National Black Justice Coalition and Dear Whites Jaclyn Moore.
Chapelle’s controversial stand-up special The closest sees him making explicit jokes about trans women’s genitals and defending DaBaby and JK Rowling, before declaring himself “Team TERF.”
He also dismisses the criticism he has faced for punching trans women in his previous comedy routines, Equanimity and Sticks and stones.
Jaclyn Moore, writer, executive producer and showrunner of the Netflix series Dear Whites, was so shocked by the comedy that she has now completely cut ties with the streaming service.
She announced her decision on Twitter Thursday, October 7, declaring that she was “done” with Netflix.
“I love so many people I’ve worked with at Netflix. Brilliant people and executives who collaborated and fought for an important art… I was thrown bottles of beer. So Netflix, I’m done, ”she wrote.

Moore added, “I will not work with them as long as they continue to broadcast and enjoy material that is clearly and dangerously transphobic.
“These words have real-world consequences. Consequences that every trans woman I know has faced. Bruises and panicked phone calls to friends. It’s real, ”she continued.
“So when he says people should be angry, a trans woman has won the ‘Woman of the Year’ award… When he’s gender wrong… When he says he should have told this mother that his girl WAS A GUY… I just can’t… I can’t be part of a company that thinks it’s worth spreading and celebrating.
Chappelle’s latest show sparked backlash immediately after its release on Tuesday, October 5, with the LGBT + GLAAD organization leading criticism against Netflix and Chapelle.
“Dave Chappelle’s brand has become synonymous with ridiculing trans people and other marginalized communities,” GLAAD said in a declaration.
“The negative reviews and viewers loudly condemning his latest special is a message to the industry that the public does not support the platform of anti-LGBTQ rants. We agree.”
The National Black Justice Coalition, a civil rights group serving the LGBT + community, also urged Netflix to remove the special saying it “should know better” than promoting such shows.
“With 2021 set to be the deadliest year on record for transgender people in the United States – the majority of whom are black transgender people – Netflix should know better,” said NBJC executive director David Johns, in a statement.
“Perpetuating transphobia perpetuates violence. Netflix should immediately withdraw The closest from its platform and apologize directly to the transgender community.
During the special, Chappelle says he has “never had a problem with transgender people.”
However, he continues a shocking monologue about trans women’s genitals, saying, “Now I’m not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I’m just saying those pussies that they’ve had … You see what I mean ?
