Andrew Lloyd Webber has revealed he was so upset after seeing the 2019 movie “Cats” that he got a dog.
In an interview with Variety, the composer behind the musical described the film as “all wrong”.
“There wasn’t really an understanding of why the music worked,” Lloyd Webber said. “I saw and I just thought, ‘Oh, my God, no.’ It was the first time in 70 years that I was on this planet that I was going to buy a dog, so the only good thing that comes out is my little Havanese puppy.
During the pandemic, Lloyd Webber said he became so attached to his new pet that he even found a way to bring it with him the last time he flew to New York.
“I wrote off and said I needed him with me at all times because I’m emotionally damaged and need to have this therapy dog,” he said. “The airline responded and said, ‘Can you prove you really need him?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, look what Hollywood did to my’ Cats’ musical.
According to Webber, the airline approved it with a note that read: “No medical report required.”
Critics vilified “Cats” even before its official release in December 2019. The trailer for the film alone was the subject of jokes and was called “creepy and bizarre.”
The film had a star cast including Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, and James Corden.
But in the end, it was a box office flop – he lost to Universal Pictures about $ 113 million, according to Deadline.
Universal Pictures is a unit of NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News.
