Panasonic expands its line of box-type cameras with the new LUMIX BS1H. The new camera features a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor with native dual ISO and full-surface 6K high-resolution recording. It’s basically the S1H in a box camera. Panasonic states that the new camera has excellent low light performance and a wide dynamic range of over 14 stops and V-Log.
The camera should work well with other Panasonic LUMIX cameras, such as the BGH1 or S1H. I don’t know if the current GH5 II and the next GH6 will be. This model interests me more because I am not a big fan of the MFT sensor. Going with a modern Lumix full frame sensor from the S1H is much more appealing. Let’s take a look at the features of the BG1H.
Full frame sensor
The BS1H features a 24.2-megapixel (35.6mm x 23.8mm) full-frame 35mm CMOS sensor that captures 6K resolution. With an active resolution of 6,024 x 4,016, the BS1H provides approximately 24.2 million photosites. The camera has an OLPF (Optical Low Pass Filter) which suppresses moiré.
With Dual Native, the ISO noise will be reduced by choosing an optimal circuit according to the sensitivity before processing the gain. In combination with signal processing by the Venus Engine. The maximum ISO sensitivity is 51,200.
The LUMIX BS1H is capable of recording high resolution 6K / 24p, 5.4K / 30p (3: 2 aspect ratio) or 5.9K / 30p (16: 9 aspect ratio) video. It also features 10-bit 60p 4K / C4K HEVC video recording when using Super 35mm equivalent frame area.
The LUMIX BS1H uses colorimetry from the VariCam range of Panasonic cinema cameras for precise colors and rich skin tones.
Panasonic states that the LUMIX BS1H offers over 14 dynamic range stops with V-Log. V-Log / V-Gamut provides high dynamic range and wide colors and creates a greater level of play for images in post-production processes.
The CMOS sensor of the LUMIX BS1H has V-Gamut, which is the optimal color space of the camera and achieves a wider color space than the BT.2020. In addition to HDR (High Dynamic Range) video recording, the camera records video with a gamma curve compatible with ITU-R BT.2100. You can now choose Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) in Photo Style.
The LUMIX BS1H also provides real-time subject detection with advanced deep learning technology to set precise focus on target subjects such as humans and animals, even while moving at high speed.

The camera is capable of HDMI output 4: 2: 2 10 bit 4K 60p / 50p and has a new thermal dispersion structure which allows unlimited video recording in various recording formats without overheating issues and has 4: 3 anamorphic mode.
Raw options
There are no internal Raw options; however, you have two external options. Apple ProRes Raw with the Atomos Ninja V and Blackmagic Raw with Blackmagic Design Video Assist 12G HDR recordings. 5.9K, 4K / [Anamorphic (4:3) 3.5K] 12-bit RAW video can also be output via HDMI with both recorders.
Combined with the Atomos Ninja V or the Ninja V +, the LUMIX BS1H will be able to record up to 5.9Kp30, 4.1Kp60 and 3.5Kp50 in ProRes anamorphic RAW.

Boost IS image stabilizer can be used and AF / AE control is available when LUMIX S Series lens with OIS is used. The SiH has a much improved autofocus and is a good upgrade with the BG1H.
I like the idea of a full frame sensor. This is a good upgrade, especially if you already own LUMIX S Series lenses. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have internal ND filters. It would also be a good upgrade, but it would increase the size of the camera in order to accommodate the mechanism.
The battery appears to be the same Panasonic AG-VBR series that was used with the BGH1.
I keep thinking about Panasonic’s cinema lineup and how it hasn’t grown over the past couple of years. It seems that the focus is more on Lumix cameras. Will we see a new Varicam soon? I like the look of the camera but it’s a beast. It would be nice to see a smaller, lighter version. The EVA1 didn’t take off so maybe Panasonic is in the process of overhauling. If the BS1H takes off with the full frame sensor, I think a more rugged version could be in the works.
The LUMIX BS1H will be available in November for $ 3,499.99.
