A new Gallup survey finds Americans’ confidence in the media to report the news accurately and fairly is almost as low as it has ever been.
Only 36% responded that they had a “great” or “a fair amount” of confidence in print, television and radio, with only 7% responding first in the poll. It was the second lowest figure in Gallup question history, only topping the 32% mark in 2016, when Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton for the presidency.
Americans have not expressed majority confidence in the press in the Gallup Inquiry since 2003. It has continued to decline since confidence rose to 45% in 2018, the second year of the Trump administration.
The drop coincides with a drop among independents, with just 31% expressing high or fair confidence in the media, down from 42% in 2018 and 36% last year.

The partisan divide in media confidence continues to be blatant. Sixty-eight percent of Democrats expressed confidence in the media, compared to just 11 percent of Republicans. Remarkably, this was a smaller gap than in 2020, when 73% of Democrats and 10% of Republicans – the lowest on Gallup on record – said they trusted the press.
