Florida police on Thursday denied reports that authorities searching a swampy nature reserve in search of fugitive Brian Laundrie had come across the remains of a new campsite.
North Port Police Department spokesman Josh Taylor confirmed to The Post in an email that CNN’s Chris Cuomo report Wednesday night was incorrect.
“No campsite has been located,” he wrote.
Cuomo said a source close to the Laundrie family told him that a campsite had been found in the 25,000-acre Carlton Reservation, where the FBI has been searching since September 18.
In an interview with the network on Thursday, Taylor said that was not what he was told.
“Is it possible that they thought there might be a campsite there or something that they could see from the air, but when they go to the ground that’s not what it is.” turned out to be? He told CNN. “Of course I think it’s a possibility.
“Ultimately, investigators tell me no campsites were found there,” Taylor said.
Laundrie, 23, is the only person concerned in the disappearance and death of Gabby Petito, from Long Island, who disappeared during the couple’s trip across the country.
Petito, 22, disappeared at the end of August while Laundrie returned home alone on September 1.
Petitio’s body was found at a remote Wyoming campground on September 19, with his death later ruled a homicide – although the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Laundrie disappeared from the family home in North Port on September 13 and is now the subject of a massive manhunt that has stretched from Florida to the Carolinas.
Laundrie has not been charged in Petito’s death, but is named on a federal arrest warrant for using her stolen bank card after his disappearance.
